Plan 301 redirects for a website relaunch
A redirect should deliver the visitor to a relevant successor. Sending every old address to the homepage is usually not an adequate solution.
Build a verifiable list
Collect old URLs with links, visits or important external references. Record destination and reason. Distinguish invented spam addresses from genuine former service pages.
Decide permanence
Permanent relocation suits a permanent redirect such as 301 or 308. Temporary circumstances require a different decision. Establish purpose before implementing rules.
Review target relevance
An old accounting guide can lead to the appropriate new accounting page. A removed download without replacement should not point to an unrelated article merely to avoid an error. Consolidated content can justify several old URLs sharing a successor.
Test real cases
Check source, actual final destination and status. Avoid loops and unnecessary chains. Handle language paths, case and parameters deliberately so broad rules do not capture unrelated URLs.
Maintain links and rules
Update internal links to final destinations. Document the rules. Do not remove redirects shortly after launch without reviewing their continuing role.
