Website migration: SEO launch checklist
Migration involves more than files and a database. Existing entry pages should still lead visitors to the appropriate content after the change.
Record the baseline
List key landing pages from Search Console, analytics and sitemaps. Record organic clicks and enquiries over a suitable comparison period. Distinguish hosting, domain and path changes.
Map important old addresses
Create columns for old URL, new URL, content and check status. An existing service guide should lead to its real successor. Without a suitable replacement, decide whether to retain, merge or remove content.
Test destination pages
Check content, headings, images, contact journeys and mobile use. Include canonical URLs, language mapping and internal links. A working homepage does not prove service pages migrated successfully.
Plan cutover and recovery
Assign owners, a maintenance window and rollback criteria. Test redirects using actual old addresses. Keep a usable backup and account for changes received during cutover.
Monitor specific outcomes
Compare errors, indexing, clicks and real enquiries. Temporary fluctuations are possible; no migration can promise zero impact. Prioritise by business importance and document fixes.
