Lost NIE certificate: prepare a replacement
The missing certificate and the NIE number are different things. Losing a document is not a reason to apply casually for a second identity number.
Identify what is missing
Distinguish a white NIE certificate, green EU registration certificate and TIE residence card. The appropriate application depends on the actual document. Booking a generic appointment without this distinction may select the wrong procedure.
Recover the existing number
Check protected copies, earlier official letters and contracts. Compare the number carefully. Do not use guessed or another person’s details merely to complete a form.
Prepare identity and loss evidence
Keep valid identification available. Check whether the relevant procedure requires evidence of loss or theft. A missing passport needs a separate replacement process.
Prepare the correct application
Confirm document type, appointment, form and fee using current official requirements. Representation cannot universally replace required personal attendance. Check competence separately if outside Spain.
Verify the replacement
Compare names and the existing NIE. Retain a protected copy and disclose the number only where necessary. Suspected misuse or identity confusion requires attention beyond replacing the document.
