Permanent residence for EU citizens in Spain

EU citizens generally acquire permanent residence after five continuous years of lawful residence. Five years since purchasing property is not automatically enough.

Identify the correct residence route

This concerns EU citizens under free-movement rules. Long-term residence permission for third-country nationals is a different procedure. Establish nationality and existing registration first.

Build a residence timeline

List addresses, activities and longer absences year by year. Match evidence to each period. A single municipal registration does not answer every question about lawful and continuous residence.

Explain gaps specifically

Collect registration records and relevant evidence of employment or other residence grounds. Assess absences under applicable rules rather than treating every journey as a break. Special cases may have different qualifying conditions.

Prepare application and attendance

Check the official current list, form, fees and local appointment route. Valid identification and accurate details matter. Do not assume every EU certificate follows an identical renewal cycle.

Separate later consequences

Permanent residence, tax residence and municipal registration are distinct. A later extended absence may also have legal consequences. Reassess before moving abroad permanently.
