Apostille for German documents used in Spain
Not every German document requires an apostille in Spain. Document type, purpose and applicable exemptions determine the route.
Identify recipient and purpose
Ask the Spanish organisation which document and version it needs. Copies, extracts and full certificates are not interchangeable. Record any requirement for a recent issue date.
Check EU simplifications first
Certain public documents circulating between EU countries benefit from simplified rules. This does not exempt every qualification, power of attorney or business record. Check the specific scope before ordering an apostille.
Find the issuing authority
Where required, the competent German apostille authority depends on the document’s type and origin. Do not send originals to an arbitrary office. Confirm jurisdiction, application route and return delivery first.
Sequence the translation
Apostille and translation solve different issues. Establish whether the apostille itself must be translated. A multilingual EU form may help in appropriate cases but does not replace every translation.
Check the complete package
Compare names, dates and all pages before submission. Retain an organised copy and track originals. Authentication alone does not establish recognition of every substantive legal effect.
