Buying a used car in Spain: ownership transfer
Signing a contract and receiving keys does not complete the administrative transfer. Buyer and seller duties should be clear before payment.
Check vehicle and seller
Compare chassis number, registration and documents. Review official vehicle status and transfer restrictions. A verbal claim that finance is paid is not suitable evidence.
Complete the contract clearly
Record parties, vehicle, price, date and time. Sign all pages properly and retain a complete copy. Resolve unclear representation or mismatched registered-holder details before completion.
Separate tax and DGT fees
The sale type determines the required tax evidence. Paying a DGT fee alone does not discharge acquisition tax. Check regional competence and proof of payment, exemption or non-liability where relevant.
Arrange transfer and sale notification
DGT generally gives the buyer a maximum of 30 days after signing. The seller should notify the sale promptly rather than rely on a promise. Notification does not replace the buyer’s transfer application.
Check driving requirements
Confirm valid ITV, insurance and vehicle documents. Submission of an application does not establish every condition for lawful driving. Keep completion evidence and updated records.
