Registering a Vehicle in Spain
Importing and registering a foreign vehicle in Spain involves technical inspection, tax formalities and registration with the Dirección General de Tráfico. We help determine the correct route for EU vehicles, non-EU imports and vehicles brought to Spain when relocating.
When must a foreign vehicle be registered in Spain?
A vehicle used only temporarily by a person who remains resident abroad may be treated differently from a vehicle permanently based in Spain. Once the owner transfers habitual residence to Spain or the vehicle is normally kept and used here, Spanish registration and tax deadlines must be examined without delay.
NIE ownership alone does not decide the issue. Residence, the vehicle’s normal location, the date it entered Spain and the circumstances of acquisition all influence the applicable route. Companies using foreign vehicles in Spain must also consider where the vehicle is effectively assigned and operated.
Different vehicles require different evidence
Vehicle from another EU country
The file normally focuses on the original registration certificate, ownership evidence, technical conformity, import ITV, registration tax, municipal road tax and the final DGT application.
Vehicle from outside the EU
Customs clearance comes first. The DUA or equivalent customs evidence, import VAT or duties and technical approval must be coordinated before Spanish registration can be completed.
Vehicle brought as relocation property
A genuine transfer of residence can permit tax or customs relief if strict ownership, prior-use and deadline conditions are met. The exemption must be documented rather than assumed.
Modified, historic or previously Spanish vehicle
Conversions, missing records, historic classification or a previous Spanish registration may require additional technical reports, homologation documents or registry checks.
Four stages from foreign papers to Spanish plates
Document review
We check identity, NIE, ownership, foreign registration records, technical data and the vehicle’s origin before appointments are arranged.
Import ITV
The vehicle is presented for the appropriate inspection so that a Spanish ITV technical card can be issued.
Taxes and exemptions
Modelo 576 or Modelo 06, municipal IVTM and any customs or transfer-tax evidence are prepared according to the case.
DGT registration
The complete file is submitted to Tráfico. Once approved, Spanish plates and insurance can be arranged.
Documents commonly requested
- Passport or identity card and Spanish NIE
- Original foreign registration certificate
- Purchase invoice, sales agreement or other ownership evidence
- Certificate of Conformity (COC) or an equivalent technical data sheet
- Spanish ITV technical card following the import inspection
- Evidence for registration tax, exemption or non-liability
- Receipt for municipal road tax (IVTM)
- Customs DUA for vehicles imported from outside the EU
- Proof of Spanish address where required
Technical conformity must be resolved first
A European COC often simplifies the technical process, but it does not replace the import ITV. If the COC is missing, incomplete or does not reflect modifications, a reduced technical sheet or additional homologation evidence may be necessary.
Tyres, lighting, towing equipment, window tinting and structural modifications can affect the inspection. We identify likely document gaps before the vehicle is presented.
Registration tax, municipal tax and customs
The Spanish registration tax is linked principally to the vehicle’s taxable value and official CO₂ emissions. Modelo 576 is used where tax is payable, while Modelo 06 can apply to exemptions or cases of non-liability. Separately, the annual municipal vehicle tax (IVTM) must normally be paid to the competent town hall.
Vehicles from outside the customs territory of the EU may also generate customs duty and import VAT. Relief connected with a transfer of residence has separate conditions and deadlines. A tax exemption should therefore be checked before the vehicle is imported or registered.
Vehicle registration questions
Can I continue driving with foreign plates after moving to Spain?
Only within the limits applicable to your residence and the vehicle’s circumstances. Once Spanish registration is required, continued use on foreign plates can create tax, insurance and enforcement problems.
Is a COC always required?
Not in every case, but suitable technical conformity evidence is required. Where no usable COC exists, an engineer or authorised technical service may need to prepare alternative documentation.
Can relocation provide an exemption from registration tax?
Possibly, if the statutory conditions concerning previous residence, ownership, prior use and application deadlines are satisfied and proven.
How long does registration take?
Timing depends on document quality, ITV availability, tax processing and the DGT appointment or submission channel. Non-EU and modified vehicles generally require more preparation.
Can FLIN handle the entire procedure?
We can coordinate document review, tax forms, ITV preparation and DGT registration. The precise scope depends on whether personal attendance, the vehicle itself or original signatures are required.
