WordPress hacked: recovery and root-cause review
Unexpected redirects, unknown users or spam may indicate compromise. Removing visible text alone does not eliminate a possible backdoor.
Record symptoms and timing
List observations, affected URLs and discovery time with timezone. Preserve warnings and relevant logs appropriately. Separate evidence from assumptions about cause.
Coordinate with hosting
Establish whether other installations are affected and what trusted recovery options exist. Contain harmful public functions in a controlled way. Uncoordinated changes can damage evidence and recovery.
Do not restore blindly
Backups may already be infected. Check date, trustworthiness and new data since the backup. Preserve a separate protected incident copy where needed for investigation.
Review entry points and access
Examine files, extensions, users and relevant configuration. Determine which credentials and sessions need renewal, using trusted devices. One external scan cannot rule out every infection.
Monitor after cleanup
Test functions, redirects and search-engine notices. Document the addressed cause, updates and remaining uncertainty. Assess necessary legal steps if data exposure is possible; a clean homepage is not complete clearance.
