Unemployment Benefits and Social Assistance in Spain
Spanish unemployment protection depends on the reason employment ended, contribution history, registration as a job seeker, family and income circumstances, and strict application deadlines. We help employees and returning residents identify the appropriate SEPE route and prepare the supporting file.
Legal unemployment is the starting point
Benefits generally require a legally recognised unemployment situation rather than a purely voluntary resignation. Dismissal, expiry of certain temporary contracts, collective measures and other statutory situations may qualify.
The employer certificate, termination letter and settlement should be checked because inconsistent information can delay the claim.
Contributory unemployment benefit
Eligibility and duration depend principally on unemployment contributions within the relevant reference period. The benefit base is calculated from contribution bases, subject to statutory minimum and maximum amounts.
The applicant normally registers as a job seeker, signs the activity commitment and submits the claim within the prescribed working-day period.
Subsidies and social assistance
Where contributory benefit is unavailable or exhausted, a subsidy or other assistance may be possible depending on age, income, family responsibilities, contribution gaps, disability, return from abroad or other circumstances.

Work in other EU/EEA countries
Contribution periods from another participating country may be considered under EU coordination rules. Documents such as the portable U1 and the sequence of work and residence are important.
Exporting an existing benefit to look for work in Spain follows a different procedure and should be arranged before departure.
Ongoing obligations and sanctions
Recipients must renew their job-seeker registration, report work and relevant changes, attend appointments and comply with the activity commitment. Travel abroad can affect entitlement and may require prior communication.
We assist with requests for documents, overpayment notices, sanctions and administrative appeals.
Useful official resources
Official requirements, fees and procedures can change. The competent authority and current rules are checked for each individual case.
Questions about Unemployment Benefits and Social Assistance in Spain

Can contributions from another EU country count?
They may be aggregated under EU coordination rules, often using a U1 document.
Must I report travel abroad?
Yes. Travel may suspend or affect benefits and should be communicated under the applicable rules.
