Moving to Spain
A successful move to Spain requires the immigration, tax, healthcare, housing, banking and registration steps to be completed in the right order. We prepare an individual timeline for EU citizens, non-EU nationals, families, workers, retirees and remote professionals.
Choose the lawful residence route
EU citizens use free-movement registration rules, while non-EU nationals require the visa or residence authorisation matching work, retirement, family or remote-work circumstances.
Application timing, permitted work, absence limits and family rights differ substantially between routes.
Plan the first registrations
The NIE, empadronamiento, Social Security number, EU registration or TIE and digital certificate are separate procedures and are not interchangeable.
Housing evidence, appointments and local office practices should be planned before travel where possible.
Documents and evidence
Passports, civil-status documents, criminal records, income evidence, health cover, accommodation and apostilles should be assembled while still in the issuing country.
Passports and civil-status records
Visa or residence evidence
Income, employment or pension documents
Health-cover or S1 documentation
Housing and foreign tax information
Tax, healthcare and daily administration
Healthcare may arise through employment, self-employment, an S1 form, family entitlement, a convenio especial or qualifying private insurance.
Spanish tax residence can begin in the year of arrival and may bring worldwide income, asset-reporting and wealth-tax consequences.
Practical risks and individual review
Keeping a home, work or family in another country can create dual-residence issues; the tax treaty and actual facts should be reviewed before assuming residence follows registration.
Requirements, appointment availability and administrative practice can differ by province and personal circumstances. We check the current competent authority and the evidence required before submission.
Useful official resources
Official requirements, fees and procedures can change. The competent authority and current rules are checked for each individual case.
Questions about Moving to Spain
Should I obtain a NIE before moving?
It may help with transactions, but it does not replace the correct residence procedure.
When should I register on the padrón?
After establishing the address where you actually live, using the municipality's required evidence.
Will I immediately become Spanish tax resident?
Not automatically; days, economic interests, family circumstances and treaty rules must be assessed for the tax year.
Can FLIN coordinate the process remotely?
Many preparatory and representative steps can be handled before or without travel, depending on the procedure.
