Modelo 303: preparing a Spanish VAT return

Modelo 303 accounts for Spanish VAT for the relevant period. Good preparation begins before opening the form, with complete invoices and correct tax classification.

Check jurisdiction and period first

Not every self-employed activity has the same VAT filing duties. Check the tax territory, census status, taxable and exempt supplies and special rules. The general form can apply monthly or quarterly. The Canary Islands generally use IGIC; Modelo 303 is not a universal solution there.

Collect complete invoices

Separate sales and purchase invoices, corrections, advances and cross-border transactions. Keep a clear record of dates, amounts and tax treatment. Check whether a document is only an order or payment acknowledgement. Not every business account debit contains deductible VAT.

Do not assume input VAT is deductible

Business purpose, a proper invoice and the other deduction conditions must be satisfied. Mixed-use purchases, exempt activities and particular expense categories require separate assessment. Income tax expense treatment and input VAT deduction are different questions. Flag uncertain items before putting them in the return.

Reconcile the return with your records

Compare totals with invoice registers and earlier returns, particularly carried-forward amounts and corrections. Prefilled portal data is a starting point for review, not confirmation that every transaction has been included. Record any supporting documents still missing.

Complete filing and payment

Payment, carry-forward, possible refund and no activity are different outcomes. Choose only an option permitted for your circumstances. Check the current calendar, including the direct-debit deadline. Keep the filed return and acknowledgement, and separately verify payment. For mistakes, identify the correction procedure applicable to that period instead of sending a second return indiscriminately.

Prepare your enquiry

Tell us the activity, tax territory and period. Explain whether a return has already been filed and whether the issue concerns missing invoices, an input VAT deduction or correction of a result.
