Find life insurance after a death in Spain
The Spanish insurance certificate can identify contracts providing death cover. It does not automatically establish a right to payment.
Choose the correct certificate
The insurance register and wills register answer different questions. Plan separate applications where needed. A known bank account does not reveal every policy.
Prepare identity and timing
Match the deceased’s details to the death evidence. The official application requires 15 working days to have elapsed after death. Check access, documents and the current fee procedure.
Follow up with the insurer
A listed insurer becomes the next contact. Contract terms, cover and beneficiary entitlement require its assessment. Being an heir does not automatically make someone the recipient of every insurance benefit.
Understand negative results
The register has a defined scope and does not cover every possible arrangement. Also review policies, employment documents and foreign insurance. An empty result is not a reason to discard all records.
Track enquiries and replies
Maintain a list for each insurer of contact, requested evidence and deadlines. Keep the certificate and correspondence. Tax consequences and estate administration require separate assessment.
