Applying for a Spanish Social Security Number

The Spanish Social Security number identifies a person within the Seguridad Social system. We assist employees, self-employed workers, interns and other applicants with a first application, verification of an existing number and obtaining an official certificate.

NUSS AND NAF

What is the Spanish Social Security number?

The Número de la Seguridad Social (NUSS) is the personal identifier used by Spain’s Social Security administration. It is normally assigned only once and remains linked to the individual throughout life.

When the person first becomes affiliated through employment or self-employment, the same identifier is commonly referred to as the Número de Afiliación (NAF). In everyday use, NUSS and NAF are often used interchangeably, but both relate to the person’s Social Security record.

Do not apply twice: A person who previously worked, completed an insured internship or was registered in Spain may already have a number. The existing record should be located before a new application is attempted.
WHO NEEDS IT?

Situations in which a NUSS is commonly required

Employees

A NUSS must exist before the first Social Security registration as an employee. Employers can often request it as part of the hiring process, but applicants may also obtain it themselves.

Self-employed workers

Before registration in the Régimen Especial de Trabajadores Autónomos, a first-time autónomo needs a personal Social Security number and correctly matched identity data.

Interns and trainees

Paid and certain unpaid placements can require Social Security inclusion. The company or educational institution may arrange the number, depending on the programme.

Domestic workers

Both the household employer and the worker must be properly identified before registration in the special employment system for household staff.

Children or dependants

A minor can have a Social Security number for administrative purposes. This should not be confused with recognition as a healthcare beneficiary.

People returning to Spain

If a number was assigned years ago, it remains the relevant identifier. We help check old documents or obtain updated evidence rather than creating a duplicate record.

APPLICATION ROUTE

Applying through Importass or the competent office

The Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social provides an online NUSS application through the Importass portal. Identification may be possible with Cl@ve, a digital certificate or other supported methods. A route for applicants without an electronic certificate may also be available, normally requiring identity verification and document upload.

Where online identification fails, personal data do not match or representation is used, the application may need additional evidence or contact with the TGSS. Form TA.1 continues to be relevant for affiliation and changes to personal details in appropriate cases.

FOUR STEPS

From identity check to official confirmation

1

Check existing records

We establish whether a NUSS may already exist from previous work, study or family-related procedures.

2

Prepare the file

Identity, NIE, Spanish address, contact details and any TA.1 or authority-specific evidence are assembled.

3

Submit the request

The application is made through the appropriate Importass identification route or coordinated with the competent TGSS office.

4

Obtain proof

Once assigned or located, the number is checked and an official certificate or downloadable confirmation is obtained.

DOCUMENTS

What is normally needed?

  • Valid passport or national identity card
  • NIE where already assigned
  • Current Spanish address
  • Email address and mobile telephone number
  • Completed TA.1 when required
  • Evidence of representation if another person acts for the applicant
  • Additional identity proof requested by the electronic system
DATA CONSISTENCY

Names and identity numbers must match

Differences in surnames, accents, passport numbers or nationality records can prevent automatic processing. If the applicant has changed passport or previously appeared in Social Security records under different data, the file may require correction before a certificate can be issued.

A readable, complete identity document and consistent contact information reduce avoidable follow-up requests.

DO NOT CONFUSE

NUSS, NIE, TIE and the health card are different

NUSS / NAF

The personal identifier used by the Spanish Social Security administration for affiliation and contribution records.

NIE

The foreigner identification number used in legal, tax and administrative dealings. It is not a Social Security registration.

TIE

The physical residence card issued to many non-EU nationals. The card can display a NIE but does not replace the NUSS.

Tarjeta Sanitaria

The regional public healthcare card. Entitlement and registration involve separate steps after the relevant healthcare status is recognised.

Vida Laboral

The employment-history report showing periods of Social Security registration. It is a report, not the number application itself.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about the Spanish Social Security number

Can I obtain a NUSS before signing an employment contract?

Often yes. A first application can be made when the number is needed for an upcoming employment or registration process, provided the applicant can complete the identification requirements.

Do I need a NIE first?

The documentation accepted can depend on the applicant and route used. Foreign applicants should normally provide the NIE when one has already been assigned, together with a valid identity document.

Is the NUSS the same as a healthcare card number?

No. The NUSS identifies the person within Social Security. Public healthcare entitlement and the regional health card require separate recognition and registration.

What if I already had a number years ago?

The old number generally remains valid. The correct step is to locate or certify it and update inconsistent personal data if necessary.

Can the application be completed without a digital certificate?

Importass may offer an identification and upload route without a certificate. Availability and evidence requirements can change, so the current procedure should be checked before submission.
